Analysis of a Rock Video 1

Foo Fighters- The Pretender

Location

1X4Ilw on Make A Gif, Animated GifsThere is just one location is this video. It is some kind of stage/studio that is a big empty space with just the band and their instruments in. At the back is a big shinny red board (like a background) and the floor is the same but white. Behind these is just black space. It resembles the fact that all they need is the music to put their point across.

Lighting

The lighting in the beginning of the video starts  as dark, low key lighting. It is them changed to high key, brighter lighting as the man turns the lights on and walks in.

The Low Key lighting is a typical convention of rock videos.

Near the end of the video, the lighting changes all together to something more unexpected.
There is an explosion on red (it may be paint) and the light goes red.

Cinematography

The camera movement is very different in this video. You could almost describe it as jolty as the camera tilts up down and across.

Editing- Fast paced editing has been used in this video. When the song is at the slower bits the editing is at the same speed however when the song gets fast, so does the editing. it is a good way to reflect the song

Costume

The costumes used in the video are quite basic. The band members are all wearing black except for the lead singer who is wearing black trousers and a white top.
Later in the video there are men
dressed as riot police with
helmets and bullet shields.
This could help reflect the rebelion of there music ad the fact the police are there.

Analysis of Pop Videos 2

Tulisa - Young

This song also came out earlier this year (2012). It was the first song she released as a solo artist and it was, and is, very popular.

Locations:

There are lots of locations used in this video. It keeps it interesting and means the audience are always waiting for somewhere new to come up. The first location is a street in a

hot country. It straight away tells the audience that she is on holiday somewhere.
There are lots of locations used in this video which all help emphasis the fun, young appearance that Tulisa is trying to put across.

Each location is somewhere that the audience thinks 'wow, i want to go there'. This is good as it means more people will be interested in the video, purely to see the location.

Because of all the locations used, the audience stays gripped as you don't know what is to come next.

Costume (clothes) :

f0tYiB on Make A Gif, Animated GifsThroughout the video, Tulisa wears different outfits for different locations.
Her first is whilst waiting to be picked up. She wears short shorts a cropped top high healed sandals a denim jacket and sunglasses. You could say that this is typical "summer" clothing and it makes her look  'young' and 'fun' just the the song is telling us.
When the location changes to a beach/sea scene, so do her clothes. She wears a long revealing orange summer dress. The colour is bright so that she stands out and it reflects the place/weather.
There is a location of a empty space where the walls have been covered in bright paint and there is a broken car behind her. Here she wears a silver evening dress. It means that she is fitting in with the quirky background.
The final outfit here is for the evening party location. She wears a dark leopard print dress that is short, tight and revealing. This shows off her 'sex appeal' and shows that she is young and can dress how she likes.

Her friends in the video wear casual holiday clothes. When in the car the boys are dressed in t-shirts and shorts, with hats and sunglasses- the typical male holiday outfit.
The girl is dressed similar to Tulisa, in a white cropped top and shorts.
When on the beach, there costume changes to beach wear, with Tulisa in a swimming costume. The girl is also in a swimming costume however has a light beach vest on. The male has just taken his top off. this could be seen as his 'sex appeal'.

In one of the locations they all have roller skates on. It makes people see that they are having fun, also is helps put across the meaning of the song showing they are young and fun.

There isn't a very clear narrative to the video as it is not really a story however it is clear for the audience to see what is happening in the video.
The video is a group of clips put together to show that they are young and fun and are enjoying life. It shows the play side to there lives and makes the audience wish that they were them.

Shots:

Lots of shot types have been used throughout the video however there are a few that have been used a lot, typically of pop video.

There are lots of close ups, mid shots and long shots of Tulisa. It shows her off to her audience and helps her sex appeal get put across.

There are also a few establishing, long shots used of the locations/views. It 1, lets the audience see where the video is set and the locations and 2, makes them jealous that they are not there.

I think that this is a successful music video as it has all the typical features of a Pop video and it has a positive impact on the audience.
This video has 11,358,973 hits on YouTube and 35,323 likes.

Analysis of Pop Videos 1

Conor Maynard-  Can't Say No

This Music video came out this year (2012). The song, 'Cant Say No', is currently in the carts in the top 10. This is the reason i chose to analyse this video; it is new and fresh on the scene therefore up to date with what is crucial to a current day 'Pop song' music video.

The First thing i looked at was locations. There are three different locations used in the video. The first; what the audience assume to be as his bedroom.

The reason they have decided to use this as one of the locations for the video is so that fans can immediately connect with the artist as they can see that he has a plain bedroom, probably like a lot of the audience. It helps draw our attention to the fact he still lives a normal life like everyone else.

The next location used in the video is outside. He (Conor Maynard) is walking down a street pathway towards a group of friends.

I thin that they used this location as it shows of the artist more, it in a light place with natural high key lighting. and also, it shows the audience that the artist does go out with his mates and that he again, is similar to us in that respect. It helps the audience feel like they know him better already.

The third and final location used in the video is of a teenage house party.

It shows he audience that he likes to have a good time, also that he has a lot of friends and that he does go out with his mates, Just like us. It fools the audience into thinking he is like us.

Next i looked at costume and props.

Conor Maynards costume is very simple; Fitted Jeans, White Van style shoes, a Plain white top and a red and black hoodie.

He also wears a red hat and has 'Beat' Headphones on.
The clothes he has been put in are like the ones he would wear every other day of his life. It makes him more believable to the audience and also makes him look like a stereotypical teenage boy.

Cinematography

There have been a lot of basic media shots used throughout the video.
Including:

Lots of close-ups and also, extreme close ups of the artists face....

He gets about 90% of the screen time in the studio and he away in or just off of center of a shot...

They do this so that his pace is the last you see therefore remember him. Also, as the artist he is the most important.

Other than artificial lighting to make rooms more ambient and to set different moods;

... There are only two other effects used..
Slow motion when the boy does a trick on a skate board;

And the moving animations on the wall behind his head..

Overall, i think that this video does fit in very well with its genre of Pop music. It is bright, fun and memorable as it needs to be and it has a lot of camera time with the artist.

In The Sun recreation video

Brief

We have been set the task of creating a music video in groups to a song of our choice. We have to do this by completing a number of research and planning posts to our blog to help us create our video. The research posts consist of analsing various pop and rock music videos to help us become more familiar with the conventions of a music video that will help us make ours.
