Carol Vernallis - The Kindest Cut
Carol Vernallis analysed editing comparing music videos and Hollywood films and how it effects the narrative.
She did this by comparing the following;
Music Videos- Multiple incomplete and obscure paths
Compared to
Hollywood Film- Single, clear paths through the film
Music Videos- An unconventional order of shots (not typical)
Compared to
Hollywood Film- Conventional shot order (very typical to film)
Music Videos- Time space, character and narrative, reletavly incomplex
Compared to
Hollywood Film- Unity of time and space
Music Videos- Discontinuity, pop video draws us away from the narrative by forgrouding other structures and elements
Compared to
Hollywood Film- Continuity, draws us in to the narrative
Music Videos- Visual hooks create continuity (figure, colour, shape, setting)
Sometimes all elements are equal, sometimes one is dominant and others subordinate.

Phantasmagorical Body - A body made up in our mind of all the shots of bits of bodies we
see
- In videos when we when we see only curtain parts of someone,
different parts of their body and you don't see the whole person,
we make our own image in our heads.
